“Oh, Manny, you came and you gave…………..”
Sorry, I know any Manilow reference is waaaaaaaay out of line, but hey, what can I say. The best thing about Manny’s clutch, game tying homer was the way he ran the bases. The $20 million a year, 500 homer club vet looked like a kid. Huge smile, arms outstretched, I’m telling you, having Papi in the dugout is helping this team in ways we mere mortals will never understand. Maybe Manny’s trying to justify that All-Star selection, speaking of which……
I love voting for the All-Stars, but we all know the fan selection is a flawed popularity contest. I don’t envy the managers of either team, after the players select (not based on popularity, but on reputation it seems), the managers are left to fill in not only what they need, but making sure that every team is represented. Some mistakes are going to be made.
Look Ichiro, Alfonso Soriano, and yes even Manny probably shouldn’t be starting, on the squad? Sure. And I have a mad man-crush on Jason Varitek, he is the definition of the word “catcher” to me, and if the Red Sox don’t resign him I will probably cry like a little girl. But, and it pains me to say it, the players voted in a guy batting .217?Really? Maybe the players voted him in based on his handling of pitchers, being prepared, I don’t know. But what about Navarro of Tampa?
In fact the players only voted for one Rays player, Scott Kazmir, from the FIRST PLACE RAYS. And what about Former Tennessee Smokie Carlos Quentin? The All Star games will always snub some, its the nature of the beast, and fans everywhere will complain, or blog….
My Final Man Picks:
NL: Pat Burrell, Philly: Not only is he playing well, but I always feel bad because it seems his hometown “fans” hate this guy for no apparent reason.
AL: Evan Longoria,Tampa Bay: One because Tampa (as much as they are the bain of my existense right now ) needs more reps at the game, Two because the guy is helping my fantasy team out, and lastly, he lived up to the hype. He’s no Chris Sabo
Sox Victory and All-Star Picks (A.L.)
So Dice-K walks like, thirteen batters and still gets a win. The Tigers just can’t catch a break, “shake up” or not. The bullpen had some hiccups, but the bats were there. Youk, Lowell, and Papi all homered, Manny swung the bat well. Good win all around.
So I’m starting with my AL All Star picks. I will try not to be a “Homer” and limit my Sox picks, just as I hope the good people of NY won’t overload the final All Star game at Yankee Stadium with pinstripes who don’t belong. Robby Cano, Jason G, I’m looking at you, both having caught Andruw Jonesitis and forgetting how to hit. So here we go…
Catcher: Pudge Rodriquez, Detroit: His team can’t get their wheels under them ,but Pudge is a firecracker who still pumps his fist after driving in a tying run and is still aces behind the plate. One of the few bright spots in Motorcity so far.
First Base:Kevin Youkilis,Boston:Come on, its the first time Youks not been “Papi-Blocked” at first, you have to vote for him! He’s hitting great and hasn’t made an error in like 300 games, plus when New Yorkers boo him, it’ll just sound like they’re saying “YOOUUUUKK”
Second Base:Dustin Pedroia, Boston: Sorry, Cano may be in line to win 5 or 6 future batting titles, but right now it just ain’t happening. Little Dustin’s in the top ten in hitting and is flashing Gold Glove all over.
Third Base:Alex Gordon,Kansas City: Lowell was hurt, A-Rod’s hurt, and Miguel Cabrera’s not quite living up to the hype. Alex Gordon, however is trying to make folks forget about his own hype failing last season. Plus I think K.C. deserves a starting All Star.
ShortStop:Derek Jeter,New York: Yes, I know. But lets face it, you wouldn’t hate him if he was on your team. Has he lost a step or two? Yep. Over rated defensivly now? For sure. Would you want him in the clutch? Without a doubt. Take Jeter out of New York and kiss that Ninties Dynasty goodbye. Last All Star game at the stadium, gotta have Jeter.
OutField:Manny Ramierez, Boston: Come on you know how well he hits in New York.
Josh Hamilton,Texas: The guy is just flat out, old school raking.
Curtis Granderson, Detroit: He misses like half the month, comes back and is flying
all over the outfield and hitting like he never left.
Designated Hitter:David Ortiz,Boston: C’mon who did you think I was gonna pick?
My Pick for starting Pitcher:Chein-Ming Wang: Sorry , but the guys 6-0 and the only steady thing about the NY starters. Show some love for Cliff Lee and Joe Saunders too, but Wang gets the Yankee nod.
Most votes:Jeter (Bold prediction I know.)
Tomorrow: the less exciting NL picks!
Hey look,some bats………
FINALLY! The offense seems to have arrived. Two series wins, one a sweep over the Rays, who have suddenly remembered that they are, well the Rays, and that pitching dual-a-thon series with the Jays. More important, two series wins over AL East foes. Next up are the Tigers, with Jim Leyland promising a “shake-up” after todays collapse/epic fail against the Twins.
I like Jim Leyland, I imagine he lives in a flea bag motel in downtown Detroit about three blocks from the park. In the morning he gets into full uni, cleats and all, and walks to the park, smoking a cigarette, listening to the comments shouted by passerbys with a wave and a nod…..
” Good job last night Jimmy!”..honk, honk
“Hey, Leyland, maybe you could get Miggy off of the Quarter Pounders and on a treadmill, huh?”..honk, (Leyland flips the bird.)
“Hey, Leyland, can Granderson pitch?” Honk, wave…..(Leyland responds, “Maybe we’ll try.”)
At least thats how I imagine it to be.
Totally unrelated, but still awesome, I’m watching a bit of the Cubs-Cards game earlier and “Former Tennessee Smokie” Yadiar Molina throws out a would be base stealer…..FROM HIS KNEES, as he’s falling forward. The guy gets my all-star vote for that alone.
Oh, and for the no people who read this, I’ll be posting my All-Star votes. Hint: I vote for more than one Red Sox player.
