What the? Two in a row! On The Road!
I know its “just” the Mariners, but Dice-K managed to strike out 6, walk only 3, even better Okajima came in with runners on, and didn’t give up a hit, let alone a run. JD Drew homered and Dustin Pedrois just keeps chugging along. Could an actual road sweep be far behind? Th eonly thing better would be if the Rays lost……………thank you Oakland! Hopefully this keeps up for the homestand which I am offically naming “Turnaround:the Return of Big Papi”
With very little time left, some Red Sox trade rumors are circling, some around left field. There are some whispers that the Sox may let Manny walk, seems his agent Scott “You’re all just jealous” Boras (and I am), wants four years for Manny.
Look, I have watch Manny since the Indian days, I have watched him become one of, if not the, most consistent righty in baseball while still acting like an eight year old. For better or worse. Look, when your career numbers start putting you on lists that only feature the names “Ruth”, “Williams” and “Foxx”" you’re doing something right. I want Manny to retire a Red Sox, I know its the hat that’ll be on his offical HOF painted Dick Perez postcard……………
But….
If you can get a young left fielder, lets say Matt Holiday for pitching,a Coco Crisp or Brandon Moss, while NOT picking up a $20 million dollar option, you gotta think about it, you’re playing for the future too you know. That playing for the future attitude is what’s primarly responsible for that 2007 World Series that didn’t involve a “curse” of some kind.
The Sox are still looking for bullpen help, thank God, but Brian “I think he’s overratted” Funtes is per the Rockies worth “at least” Clay Bucholtz. And you don’t think bullpen arms are at a premium?
Dr Drew and Wille Done Wrong
Remember when we all thought JD Drew cost too much, too many years, played kinda, I dunno, quietly? Remember when he woke up in the playoffs, but people joked about “next year, more of the same”? Well, next year is here and all JD and his quiet, workmanlike self is doing is making you remember that Manny and Papi aren’t the only ones who can rake. He’s kinda reminding me of “The Natural” There, I have now guaranteed he will hurt himself in the next day or two and Phillies fans can stop booing him. I mean really, booing a guy who didn’t sign as a draft pick TEN YEARS AGO? At least boo somebody who played for you, you know, like you guys do Pat Burrell. I’m surprised Chase Utley, in his current slump, hasn’t had crowbars thrown at him yet. JD Drew, (yes when he’s healthy, I know.), is flat out a professional ballplayer who has picked up the slack left by the injured, so kudos to him. And to Coco whose deciding hitting for power is a good thing, along with the best CF defense anywhere.
Wow, and I thought Steve Phillips was bad. How are you a horrible GM, then wind up an anyalyst on ESPN? Anyway, Omar Miniya is colder than Frank Vincent swinging an aluminium bat in “Casino” Tell a guy he’s not getting fired, let him fly 3,000 miles, win a game, then fire him around 3 O’clock in the morning EST. I’m surprised Willie didn’t come home to find the Met’s batboy in bed with his wife and his dog dead. Look I know you can’t fire players, unless you’re the Texas Rangers, but Willie wasn’t all to blame. Anyway if the collapse of last season wasn’t enough to fire him, why wait until now? Somehow, I don’t think this will motivate the Mets, they’ll be at home come October and Willie will be doing commentary on Fox.
