“Dude, this is awesome!”
Alright, now that I’ve had time to digest it all, the above quote is now one of my favorite of all time. And no it wasn’t said by a drunken frat guy, but by Josh “The Natural” Hamilton after hitting his first homer in the All Star Home Run Derby tonight. After swinging away, Hamilton turned to the catcher (what a thankless job, HR Derby catcher) and said “Dude, this is awesome!”
There are better baseball quotes to be sure, but one that sounds like an eight year old would have said it upon homering in their backyard just seems right to me. Everyone knows the story, and its a great one, and while I remember some folks groaning about “Why give him a second chance?”, and “Why is a recovering addict a hero? He did it to himself.” when Hamilton came back in Cincy, if you didn’t get chills during that first round, you are a soulless creature. Personally I root for the guy every chance I get, and while I wish he’d won, I kinda think it makes sense that he didn’t.
Hamilton’s story, no different than a lot of peoples other than the titanic baseball ablity, is a very human one. Human, meaning full of mistakes, tragedies, triumphs, set backs and ultimatly redemption. In the derby, Hamilton worked hard that first round, did everything he could, but in the end fell short. Such is life sometimes. But the triumph in it? He’ll get up tomorrow, head to BP and get ready to play in the All Star Game. And I bet at some point, despite what happened tonight, he’ll turn to Manny or Jeter or any of the others who have been there before and say: “Dude, this is awesome”. All the while grinning from ear to ear.
HAM-IL-TON, HAM-IL-TON, HAM-IL-TON
Poor Justin Morneau, win the home run derby and no one cares. Alright maybe thats extreme, but really did you see Hamilton’s first round? Morneau was patient and hit what he needed to inthe final round to win, you see its stratagey as much as it is brute force.
But Brute Force is fun to watch! I hope none of Josh’s HR’s hit anyone. That person is possibly decapitated or at least limbless now. Can the man hit anything less than 500 ft? Dear lord, that was easily the most fun I have had watching the Derby. It seemed he could stay there all night hitting homers, but it was bound to tire him out, allowing Morneau to patiently swing his way into first place.
If you didn’t have fun watching Hamilton’s first round, you don’t love baseball. The Babe was looking on………………………hot dog in hand and a smile on his face.
All Star Break!!!
Hey, is that, why it is, look its First Place! Why, how’ve you been little fella? Long time no see. Yeah I know its only like half a game, but I’ll take it. The Sox bullpen held steady, alert the press, and they squeezed out a 2-1 win while the wheels keep coming of the Tampa Bay machine, against the Indians none the less. I don’t think Tampa Bay is finished by any means, but I think all that “youth” makes them a wild card, not a division champ, at least not this season.
The Yankees are more in a “slow fade” kinda mode, which as long as they keep fading is fine with me. Hopefully the break will bring a renewed bullpen and Big Papi back in the line-up. Speaking of which the Big Man is taking BP and will be at the All Star game as a thank you to the fans even though he can’t play. Then its off to the AAA Pawsox and maybe even AA portland to get some at bats. If you live near either of those teams, its safe to assume those games are sold out as we speak. David Ortiz vs minor leauge pitching…………..
Speaking of crushing homeruns. I’m a little let down Manny’s not taking Papi’s place in the HR Derby, maybe he’s got a call to make! I’m putting my money on Josh Hamilton, although I have a feeling Berkman may cause a challenge. But I’m guessing Hamilton could sit in there and hit them out all day long, while eating a hot dog, Babe Ruth style.
