No Rally Needed

Hey look at that, no need for any late inning heroics! See, Beckett has a rough outing, you just score him 18 runs or so to get him the win. Extra bonus points for getting a lead the bullpen can’t lose. Even Varitek had a multi hit game, Kevin Cash had a homerun, in fact everyone had a hit, I think the bat boy had a couple of singles. Varitek had the “big hit”, what was origanaly called an 8-4-5 triple play was overturned as a trapped ball RBI single. From there the rout was on.

When the Sox left New York, they trailed Tampa Bay by five games, they are now only two games back, thanks to the sweep of the Twins and, yep, Tampa dropping two to the Yankees. Hopefully with Baltimore coming to town, another sweep and we can ride first place into the All-Star break. Stray observations:

: If the Brewers suddenly added a two car garage to Miller Park, would the Cubs add a parking garage in the Wrigley outfield?

:It was mustache give away day at Yankee Stadium. Way to celebrate the end of the House That Ruth Built, give away fake facial hair. Lou Gerhig must be smiling down somewhere.

:AJ Burrnett had a root canal, then later THE SAME DAY, pitched a win against the Orioles. In the morning, Burrnett will eat a box of nails for breakfast, walk to your house with a dump truck on his back, ring the doorbell and punch your grandma when she answers.

:On both SI.com and ESPN.com, there wasn’t one headline about A-Rod’s divorce….for once.

:D on Mattingly will join the Dodgers as hitting coach. Don Mattingly’s mustache was what Giambi’s mustach hopes to grow up to be.

Pitch, Don’t Hit, Repeat…

I like the close games, the pitcher’s duels, really I do. But its more than a little nerve racking to be trapped at work watching play by play updates online and seeing nothing but zero after zero pop up, waiting for the flood of runs to come, hopefully from the Sox side. Once again the Jays pitcher, McGowan, hung tight with the Sox starter Dice-K, through seven scorless before Papi unloaded to right, with the Jays answering back with a run of thir own the very next inning.

Lowrie looked to be the winning run, until he was thrown out at the plate. No we had to wait one more batter for the Captain to do the honors. I feel bad for Lester and Dice-K, two games in a row the starters shine and Paps ends up with the win. But who cares as long as they win. Hopefully we can continue to win the close ones.

I think the division is shaping up nicely for the Sox. Baltimore’s just too young, sorry but the fairy tale’s gonna be over and the O’s are probably looking at last place. Toronto’s next to last, great pitching staff, too bad none of them can hit, and the Jays aren’t going after Barry Bonds anytime soon. And I’ll say it now, I think the Rays and Yanks are fighing for second place, and I think the Rays are the team to keep the Yanks out of the wild card and out of the playoffs.

Speaking of the Yanks, I don’t wish an injury on anyone, well, maybe Kyle Farnsworth, but the Bronx Bombers are scheduled for arough patch. A-Rod’s down for two weeks, Posada’s DL’d, and now Philip Huges lands there as well. Although Huges being hurt may be the best thing thats happened to him all year.

I was thinking about my All-Star vote today, yes I think about things like that, and I’m afraid that Yankee nostalgia, last year for the stadium, blah, blah, etc. is going to lead to extreme homerism on the part of New Yorkers.  I really hope its not six Yankees/three Red Sox and some other guys……..
